Insight...

There are times when Daniel knocks my socks off. When we read the last Harry Potter book together, despite all the people who died earlier in the series, the one death that brought heartache to Daniel was the death of Dobby the house elf when Dobby helps to save Harry Potter from the home of the Malfoy's. Watching the movie version in HP7 this week in preparation for the upcoming last movie release stuck with him in the same way the book did.
A few days later, Daniel was quoting the movie with Matthew. They were both laughing about the 'squeek squeek squeek' sound, which they'd laughed about when watching the movie. Daniel then gave some more quotes - "How Dare you take a Witche's wand..." and a couple others. We had a conversation about girls being Witches, and boys being Wizards, which I confirmed.
Then, my 7 year old asked me: "Mom? How come in all the cartoons, there is ALWAYS an evil witch, but never an evil Wizard? How come they make it sound like all the bad magic people are girls?"
Of course, we talked about how Voldemort is an evil wizard, so they do show it sometimes, but he was insistent, that all the cartoons that he has seen portray witches as evil... to which I thought two things. One - my son has amazing insight for such a young man. and Two - I guess maybe I should let him watch The Wizard of Oz... at least there is a good witch in that. (although, it's not a cartoon...)
